San Churro Chocolateria, Glebe

Looking for somewhere to sit after being dragged around Glebe markets by my cousin, San Churro's happens to be conveniently located. Known for their Churros, you'd be hard pressed to order anything else.

Max Brenner

Tutti Frutti Waffles for Two

What is it?
Max Brenner is a chocolate cafe. Not a HUGE fan of chocolate like I am? They also serve icy shakes, coffee, tea and a variety of desserts.

Where is it?
There are quite a number of Max Brenner cafes scattered around Sydney - believe me, I've been to most of them. If you're in the city centre then head to Pitt Street. There's a cosy Max Brenner on the lower ground floor of David Jones. Can't find a seat there? Just walk across to Westfields and there's a more spacious cafe on level 6. This one is opened until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays too! If you've been sight-seeing around Circular Quay and The Rocks, walk down George Street and you'll find a Max Brenner on the corner of George Street and Margaret Street. Treat yourself to a coffee or hot chocolate after an adventurous day :)

What is there to do?

  1. Dessert time!
  2. Relax with a coffee, tea or a hot chocolate.
  3. Try some of Max's desserts. The waffles are the best!
  4. Buy a box of pralines or choose from the many gift options for your friend ;)

Recommendations?
Yummy: Tutti Frutti Waffles and the Thick Italian Hot Chocolate. I order this almost every single time.
Not so yummy: I didn't enjoy the Chocolate Souffle. Who knows. Maybe I am just not a fan of souffle.

Cheeky Chocolate, North Strathfield

People get all giddy from eating chocolate, even the thought of it. It's the sort of thing that gets people going. It's an aphrodisiac for lovers, an energy buzz for children, a little pick me up for the depressed, a proven cure for the injured wizard or witch, and a befitting inclusion for the health conscious but most importantly it's almost everyone's favourite flavour. It's little wonder this chocolate café is a welcome opening in the bustling Strathfield area. And with Zumbo at the helm of the menu, the big name has drawn in droves in the past.

Jamie's Italian, CBD

Who's got a stack of Jamie Oliver cook books yet only looks at the pictures and never cooks them? Me, sorta. Jamie's the sort of international identity that people would flock in droves just to even taste something under his brand. They've done well taking advantage of a Jamie crazed era with this restaurant but I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner because everyone loves Jamie. Besides health officials and school boards. I mean seriously, Jamie at Home has to be some of the most riveting television I've ever seen.

Eveleigh Markets, Darlington

Everyone hates waking up early. Nothing better than snuggling in for an extra hour under warm blankets especially winter time. But you then start that phase in your life where you wake up early and you suddenly realise you've been missing out all this time. You catch those rare glimpses of the sunrise, you're able to chuck in a run before breakfast, you get that extra hour or two cram session, you just get so much more done. It's true that the early bird catches the worm and I certainly wasn't going to miss out on the worm that is the Eveleigh Markets. That didn't really make sense.

Marque, Surry Hills

Perennial 3 hatter and Australian Gourmet Traveller restaurant of 2012, Marque restaurant can be seen to represent the penultimate experience in Australian dining. Having been there already and thoroughly enjoying the experience, the 45 dollar Friday lunch prix fix was too good of a deal to pass up and keen to see what the restaurant has to offer, a return visit was in the works.

Eat Art Truck, Camperdown

What lives on oil, has a deep fryer, steering wheels, a honker and a cash register? A transformer! No it's actually the latest creation by ex-Tetsuya sous chef Stuart Mcgill. And that aforementioned oil comes in two types. Petroleum and vegetable. Delightful. The concept is basically a kitchen in a truck that drives all around the Sydney area serving up Korean Japanese food. It just so happens that it dropped by my uni so I couldn't miss out on a quick lunch before an exam.

Reuben Hills, Surry Hills

Reuben Hills has been quite a popular café of late; boasting an modern industrialised two storey fit out along with a coffee roastry on the top floor and of course their signature Reuben sandwich made down below.

Caramel Shake 6.5
Although coffee was their speciality, I opted instead for their shake after knowing I was going to be assignmenting later on that night and didn't want to be buzz crashing. It turns out it was the right choice. The caramel shake wasn't as sweet as one would think with bitter undertones that made it quite delicious. In drinking all the milk, what's left over is the residue froth that was gorgeously thick yet airy, almost between the consistency of ice cream and whipped cream and it only made it even better.

Iced Latte 5
L's iced coffee proved to be even more bitter much to my dismay because I love my coffee black and bitter and would of love to have the whole drink to myself. I definitely have to go back for their coffee.

Chicken Burger
A heavily thyme infused chicken patty was slapped down with a crusty brioche with the pickled salad. Very difficult to eat but well worth the trouble.

the Not REUBEN- wagyu salt brisket, pickled slaw, melted manchego, horseradish cream 15
My Reuben had a wagyu that didn't quite have the melting fattiness that you would associate with it, however the cheese and cream would surely make your carotid artery go crazy. It get's even better when you clamp down on with your hands and the mayo just seeps through the holes of the rye. It's balanced out quite well with the tang of the pickled slaw along with the surprising neutrality of the radishes.

Doggs breakfast - Ice cream 'sandwich' with salted caramel 9
As appealing as the Dog's Breakfast sounds... not, I couldn't leave without something sweet. Very simple, the caramel looked incredibly sweet but again, the slight bittery saltiness tempers it out. It goes really well with the slightly more neutral vanilla ice cream and the thick brownie sandwich.

I've been to quite a few cafés around Surry Hills and Reuben Hills is a bit more expensive then the rest of them, but something keeps the crowds coming back and it certainly can't only be the caramel, as good as it is. The food is well made and the service is quite decent and a return visit is certainly in the works to try their coffee.

Reuben Hills on Urbanspoon

No, we aren't the most amazing gastronomes or chefs. Heck, half our team doesn't even know how to cook... well. However, what we really love is eating. And lots of it. We enjoy that occasional freebie, filling up that craving for a midnight snack and finding a 20 in our pockets that we thought we never had, and using that as an excuse to go out eating. As we battle the ongoing war on uni student poverty, we'll bring you the most swoon worthy recounts of our latest foodie adventures.
